When a Snake Bites in Your Dream: How God Can Use Our Dreams to Grow Us Spiritually

Last night, I had a dream that was so vivid, so intense, that I woke up knowing it wasn’t “just a dream.” It carried weight, warning, and an invitation from God.

In this dream, I was about to walk through the front door of a house when a large brown snake slid out from underneath. I froze, knowing instinctively to stand still. But instead of retreating, the snake crawled up my leg, then my back, and bit into the back of my skull.

The rest of the dream unfolded like a strange drama:

  • I sought help from someone I would never normally trust — an ex-partner with a dark history — and though reluctant, they helped remove the snake.

  • The snake’s colour kept changing — brown, then black, then black and red — as though it was trying to disguise itself.

  • I called my two sons for help: one is skilled in handling snakes, the other is training to be a paramedic.

  • I kept saying, “I feel sick, I feel awful,” but I never got to find out if the venom had gotten into my system. Then I woke up.

It’s easy to dismiss dreams like this as random. But Scripture tells us otherwise:

“For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night…” (Job 33:14–15)

Dreams can be a way God reveals hidden spiritual realities, warns us of unseen danger, or invites us to deal with something buried deep in our soul.

The Spiritual Meaning of My Dream

As I prayed over this dream, here’s what I believe God was showing me — and how you can apply the same process to your own dreams.

  1. Pay attention to the setting

    • The snake appeared at the door. In dreams, a door often represents a threshold, a place of transition. This told me the dream was about something I was about to step into.

  2. Look at the symbols

    • The snake: Biblically, snakes often represent deception, danger, or spiritual attack (Genesis 3, Luke 10:19).

    • The bite to the back of my head: This suggests an attack on my thoughts, identity, or discernment — an area I can’t “see” without help.

    • The colour changes: This spoke of a threat that disguises itself in different forms.

  3. Notice the people involved

    • My ex-partner, someone I would never normally trust, became part of the solution. God may have been reminding me that He can even use unlikely people or past experiences to bring healing or reveal truth.

    • My sons represent wisdom, healing, and generational strength — a reminder that God has already placed help in my life.

  4. Identify the unresolved feeling

    • I woke feeling sick, uncertain if the venom had taken hold. This tells me God was prompting me to seek further healing in prayer, not assume the problem was solved.

How You Can Use Your Dreams for Spiritual Growth

You don’t have to be a dream interpreter to grow spiritually from your dreams. Here’s a simple process:

  1. Write it down immediately

    • Even fragments can be significant.

  2. Pray for understanding

    • Ask the Holy Spirit: “What are You showing me through this?”

  3. Identify key symbols

    • Use Scripture to understand the meaning. For example, a snake in the Bible often represents the enemy’s deception or danger.

  4. Ask: Is this warning, encouragement, or revelation?

    • Some dreams reveal attack; others reveal healing or God’s plans.

  5. Respond

    • If it’s a warning — pray for protection, break any agreement with the enemy, and declare God’s Word over the situation.

    • If it’s an encouragement — thank God and walk in it.

    • If it’s a revelation — seek wisdom on how to apply it.

Why This Matters

Our dreams can be more than just subconscious noise. They can be windows into the spiritual realm, invitations from God to go deeper, or alerts to prepare for what’s ahead. Ignoring them can mean missing a moment of divine instruction.

In my case, God used this dream to highlight an area where the enemy may be trying to influence my thoughts through something from my past — and to show me that while the threat may have been removed, I still need His cleansing power to remove every trace of venom.

A Prayer for Dream Clarity

Lord, I thank You that You speak to me in the night. Give me discernment to understand the dreams You send. Expose every plan of the enemy. Heal any hidden wound and remove every trace of venom from my soul. I declare that I have the mind of Christ, and no weapon formed against me shall prosper. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
